Motivation Takes Work!

LaFitterina: I’ve been pondering why people seem to have a deficit of motivation. Why do we need to consciously ‘get motivated’? Why do we turn to motivational speakers, motivational books and articles, aphorisms (“Get up every morning and tell yourself I can do this”), and blogs?

Why do we have a tendency to dwell on the negative? Why do we have up and down cycles, and periods when it seems that life is one big struggle?

Our motivation waxes and wanes like crazy and we aren’t able to pinpoint why. Some days we feel we can take on the world and the next we don’t want to do diddly.

It seems like we humans are suffering entities, and it takes effort to bring us out of the doldrums and into the realm of joy. We have to work at being happy.

If there are MoveGirlGO readers who are in need of some motivation right now, it’s unlikely that I can offer the exact right words of inspiration, but it might help to remember that you’re not alone, everything is temporary, and go easy on yourself.

Mushy pears? Mealy apples?

Ms. Bockle: I’ve got news for these fruits—they’re edible! Since I’m not one to throw ‘fresh’ fruit away, I was motivated to come up with a plan for the unappealing apples and pears in my possession. One doesn’t need to peel the fruit—unless the peel has gone all brown and nasty.

  • Melt one or two tablespoons of butter in a skillet—depending on how much fruit you want to saute. Add one teaspoon of cinnamon and stir it around the melted butter.
  • Remove the cores, and then cut up the fruit into 1 inch sized pieces.
  • Add the apple pieces first, then—gauging the firmness of the pears, add the more firm first, until all the pieces are in. Stir until all the fruit is coated with the butter mixture.
  • Test for doneness with a fork.
  • No need to add sugar—the fruit has enough already, and they should all be sitting in their own syrup.
  • No need to be concerned about the calories imbibed from the consumption of the butter, since pears have quite a high fiber content. One can draw one’s own conclusions about that statement.
  • For an added treat—and for protein (and even more fiber)—add ¼ cup of granola.

Can be consumed warm or cold.
