Solo or Classes: Gym Gym Gym

My post this week is a play on that old joke: “I never drink unless I’m alone or with somebody”! That is, I never exercise unless I’m alone or with somebody. Also, I hardly ever exercise unless I’m at my gym (Bay Club), and luckily I can make myself go there pretty much everyday.

My preference is to be in a class with a motivating & fit instructor, enough participants to create high energy but not super-crowded, and good music. Of course, I have my fave classes, and at present they are:

Monday: PilatesBallet
Tuesday: Bollywood
Wednesday: CardiSculpt
Thursday: Zumba or BarreFit
Friday: Hatha Yoga
Saturday: StepEx

Wow, that’s a pretty wide variety of classes, which is probably what makes me look forward to each day of each week.

Most days, I also spend time on the elliptical in order to get enough cardio and put additional steps on my pedometer. Also, if there’s only a short cool-down at the end of class, I do extra stretching for about 10 minutes so I won’t feel stiff or sore the next day.

stretching_cageI don’t like any of the Sunday classes, so I generally just show up at the gym around mid-day and go from there. Last Sunday, for example, I started with the elliptical machine and then the treadmill. After 50 minutes of cardio, I used some of my favorite machines to work hamstrings, inner thighs, and outer thighs. Then abs on a mat, mainly crunches, followed by 15 minutes of stretching including my favorite apparatus, the Stretch Cage.

That added up to 1-1/2 hours — a better workout than I had anticipated! It’s always iffy to depend on ‘me’ to be the motivator, and such a relief when I don’t let myself down!

Hope this helps our readers figure out their own best mode of exercising. A little introspection is good, but more than a little introspection can make you crazy — so don’t dither around thinking about it, just MoveGirl GO!
