Welcoming the Change of Fall

Fall is my favorite time of year for many reasons. Football season kicks off, but we still have baseball. It is a great time of year to travel. The weather starts to shift, so we are starting to reach for a jacket or sweater. We also see a shift in produce in our stores.

I love how the apples and pears start to come to life in the fall. They seem to burst with crisp sweetness that delights the taste buds. Images of apple pies start to dance in my head, begging to be baked and then consumed with vanilla bean ice cream. I can smell that yummy hot apple cinnamon aroma already.

My neighbor has been stretching me outside my comfort zone and introduced me to the lotus root this week. She skillfully made a ginger chicken dish with it that was delicious. The root tastes similar to a water-chestnut and does offer some vitamins. The lotus is a flower that floats on the water and you can eat the root… who knew?

The change of season is a great time to reach for some of your favorite things and to try something new. Either way, it is a welcome change.
