Being flexible is a boon in my yoga practice. A few years ago I was trying out an inversion with a deep back bend, when I went too far and relied on my flexibility and left out strength and integrity in the pose. I left the class knowing something was wrong. I had torn some rib cartilage. I had to take 6 weeks off from ANY form of exercise.
Going back to vinyasa practice after recovering I was very tentative. Any back bending would have me very aware of my alignment and tightening up my core before going to a place of flexibility. I’ve learned to use strength with flexibility and that has enriched my physical practice.
I like being flexible but without strength I can and have injured myself. Staying mindful and present, knowing my limits and listening to my body has helped me understand my vulnerabilities.
